Beware of fake requests in the name of Banca d'Italia

We want to warn you once again about fraudsters who try to trick you into handing over money.

There have recently been several scam attempts using the name and logo of Banca d'Italia, the Italian central bank. For instance, scammers may ask for money to redeem funds previously invested with Banca d'Italia, or to secure the release of journalists allegedly held hostage abroad—with the promise that Banca d'Italia itself will refund the money.

Do not respond to these requests. Instead, report any suspicious activity to the judicial authorities by contacting your nearest police station or Carabinieri station. If you have any doubts or need clarification, you can submit an information request to Banca d'Italia through the 'Online Services' section on its website.

Bear in mind that Banca d'Italia never asks citizens for money and does not manage their funds. It is a central bank—not a commercial bank. Its role is to maintain price stability against inflation, print banknotes, set rules to keep banks sound during tough times and ensure fair treatment of customers. It also monitors compliance with those rules and performs other functions to serve the country.

These types of scams use psychological manipulation tricks to steal your money. The scammer pretends to be a trustworthy individual, company, or institution and asks you to send money or to share your bank account or credit card details.
