Rai and Banca d'Italia for financial culture
28 February 2025
Banca d'Italia collaborates with the national public television and radio broadcasting company Rai and other main broadcasting stations on the topics of financial education and consumer protection, with the aim of raising public awareness about the importance of basic financial culture to make informed money management choices. The initiative focuses on the most common topics, the ones closest to the consumers' everyday experience and questions.
What is an instant credit transfer and when is it useful? What are its advantages and risks? How do I spot a scam and what can I do if I find out I have been scammed? How do I invest my savings? What are the benefits of careful planning? Are cryptocurrencies all the same?
In the course of the programmes - ranging from news to deep dives, from entertainment to radio channels - Banca d'Italia experts answer these and other questions in an easy and accessible way.
Television and radio allow Banca d'Italia to reach a wide audience, including those audience members that are not easily engaged by conventional financial education initiatives.
Working together with the public broadcasting service means being able to experiment with an innovative language and method to talk about complex topics in simple words.
The results of the initiative
To understand whether discussing personal finance on TV and radio can help improve the financial skills of viewers and listeners, in 2024, the initiative was accompanied by a study, currently being published, aimed at assessing its effectiveness.
The results of the study indicate that the initiative was successful in delivering economic and financial content. In particular, people who watched the speeches by experts from Banca d'Italia on risk diversification and the relationship between risk and return have shown an improvement in their knowledge, a greater willingness to explore financial topics in the future, and increased awareness of the importance of diversifying financial investments.
