The 1,000 Lira note: MUDEM's first virtual exhibition opens today
27 March 2025
The history of an iconic banknote is the focus of the exhibition at the Money Museum
MUDEM inaugurates its first exhibition available online for free today, dedicated to one of the most famous banknotes in Italy's history, which has even been celebrated by memorable folk and other original songs: the 1,000 lira note!
Visitors will be welcomed into innovative 3D environments, borrowed from online video games and inspired by some of the most beautiful historical reception rooms on Banca d'Italia's premises. Visitors will be able to explore the exhibition as if they were in a physical museum, just by using their PC, smartphone or tablet. They can explore multimedia content, information sheets and the banknotes displayed to find out more about the 1,000 lira note, and retrace over one hundred and forty years of Italian history through a banknote that was long seen as an icon of prosperity.
The 1,000 lira note really has travelled through the history of Italy, from monetary unification to the introduction of the euro. Each banknote tells a story, with economic-financial, historical, artistic, and social implications that will awaken the memory of the generations who experienced it firsthand and that will be a discovery for younger visitors.
