#Istayhome. Make your home a cyber safe stronghold

While working from home has undeniable advantages, it may also pose threats to our security, and not just our cyber security. We have already seen how - through a series of increasingly sophisticated scams - criminals can get hold of the data they need to access our bank accounts, but more personal data are also at risk.

CERTFIN - a public/private consortium, to which the Bank of Italy belongs, set up to improve the capacity for cyber risk management - has published an interesting awareness campaign by Europol, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, called 'Make your home a cyber safe stronghold'.

Here are the five main tips to enhance our homes' protection against cyber-attacks:

  1. Wi-Fi: always change the default router password
  2. Install antivirus software on all devices connected to the internet
  3. Choose strong and different passwords for your e-mail and social media accounts
  4. Review your app's permissions and delete those you don't use
  5. Back up your data and run regular software updates

These days, we'd like to add three golden rules:

  1. Don't share news that doesn't come from official sources
  2. Don't make donations to charities without double-checking their authenticity
  3. Don't buy things online that seem to be sold out everywhere else and that are suspiciously cheap
