On 23 July, the European Central Bank (ECB) launched an online survey inviting all residents of euro area countries to help choose the design of the next series of euro banknotes. You have until 21 September 2026 to express your preference by selecting one of the ten finalist designs.

Taking part is simple: just visit the dedicated page on the ECB's website, view the shortlisted designs and vote for the one you like best. By participating, you can help shape the appearance of future euro banknotes.

The finalist designs have been selected by a panel of experts and are inspired by two themes that reflect European identity:

  • European culture
  • Rivers and birds

The preferences collected through the online survey will be considered alongside those of a representative sample of euro area citizens gathered by an independent research company. The results will help the ECB's Governing Council make its final decision by the end of the year.

The new banknotes will feature a more modern visual design and incorporate advanced technologies to enhance protection against counterfeiting. Accessibility will also be improved, making the banknotes easier to recognise for people with visual impairments.

Your contribution matters. Banknotes are part of everyday life and are a symbol of our shared European identity. This is a practical opportunity to have your say and contribute to a decision that will affect millions of citizens for years to come.

The European Ombudsman Award for Good Administration

Did you know that the ECB entered the 2026 European Ombudsman Award for Good Administration for its initiative to involve citizens in decisions about the future design of euro banknotes?

This award recognises projects that promote transparency, participation and inclusion across Europe. The ECB’s submission highlighted the participatory process used to design future euro banknotes and its commitment to involving citizens directly in decisions about the themes and values to be represented at every stage of the process, including through surveys such as this one.

Take a few minutes to complete the survey and vote for your favourite design by 21 September

For more information and to take part in the survey, visit the dedicated page on the ECB's website.
