The word inflation entered the vocabulary of economics around 150 years ago, but the phenomenon it describes - a general rise in prices - has existed since ancient times. Keeping the cost of living under control is a challenge faced by all governments. The Bank of Italy invites young people to take on this challenge through the workshop The Great Inflation Game, which will be available in Genoa from 23 to 31 October as part of the Science Festival. The activity is reserved for school classes, requires booking, and will take place at the local branch of Banca d'Italia in Via Dante.

The game is set in Genoa several centuries ago, when the city was a powerful maritime republic ruled by a doge. Participants will help the doge manage inflation: they'll travel through key locations in the city, encountering opportunities and obstacles, chances to move forward and risks of penalties. The winner is the one who manages to get the doge to the finish line within the time limit, having found a solution to stop inflation. Along the way, players will learn about the causes of inflation and its impact on the economy and everyday life.

And today, who manages inflation?

Nowadays, managing inflation means taking action to ensure price stability. In Italy, and in other European Union countries that use the euro, this responsibility lies with the European Central Bank (ECB), working together with the national central banks - including the Bank of Italy.
